Today is the final day of Goodwood, with the Stewards' Cup and the Nassau Stakes. It is also Unison race day at Doncaster. My enthusiasm for the turf is matched only by my loyalty to the trade union movement. For most of my working life I have been a member of Unison and its predecessor union NALGO, with occasional periods in membership of other unions, dictated by my itinerant career: the NUJ, the AUT and MSF. Nevertheless, I'm not sure we ought to spend the union's subscription income on sponsoring races. I find it hard to imagine many punters deciding to join a union because it sponsored a seller on an afternoon when all eyes are on Goodwood.
