I've always been fond of eiders. I have never verified this, but I imagine that this afternoon's big race, the Eider Chase at Newcastle, is named after the bird: there is a colony on the Farne Islands. I have seen them occasionally, in St James's Park, and enjoyed the curious mating call of the male. The race is a tough four miles and one furlong. I have gone for James Reveley's Eyre Square
