Who remembers Mackeson? Can one still buy it, I wonder? It was a stout, and gave its name to today's big race at Cheltenham, the Gold Cup Chase. The race is now sponsored by Paddy Power, after Murphy's and Thomas Pink both briefly lent it their names. Apropos, I might organise a competition to find the most ludicrous and inappropriate sponsorship in racing; in my experience a meeting I attended a few years ago sponsored by a lingerie shop would be the most obvious contender.
