The jumping season is upon us, the very best months of the racing year. I have argued before, and often, that this is the purest form of the sport. Is it the oldest?
I don't know the historical evidence, but is it not likely that the idea of racing two or more horses against one another on a flat surface preceded the idea of racing over obstacles? I shall investigate.
