'Closing libraries is not in itself the work of Satan', said Margaret Hodge to the Public Library Authorities conference. I suppose not; one can imagine some circumstances in which a closure might be justified, in order to build a better, bigger library for example. In a climate when Labour and the Conservatives compete with one another to see who will cut the deepest, I think it's unlikely that we will see many closures that are not driven by the desire, ideological or financial or both, to cut the public provision of knowledge.
Then I read this on BoingBoing: Rich guy dislikes poor people, wants local kids to "lose sleep" over plan to shut library. Looks like the work of Satan to me.
