From theory to practice: Michael Stephens introduced the next session in which we heard Jenny Levine, of the American Library Association and the Shifted Librarian, Thor Bur of Copenhagen Public Library and Fedja Kuelenovic of the Peace Support Operations Training Centre.
Jenny gave an introduction to account of how libraries, principally in the US, are using podcasting for a number of purposes: library audio guides, talks and lectures, book reviews and so on, and also gave a guide to how to start podcasting, not something I have ever done, but perhaps the world is ready for my light bass-baritone. As well as producing podcasts themselves, libraries need to be able to support users' podcasts: how many Peoples' Network computers have microphones and podcasting software installed, I wonder?
Thor showed how Danish public libraries are using tagging (that is physical plastic tags) on book stock, and instant messaging for reference service. Fedja showed how he had used Library 2.0 in developing services to the armed forces in Bosnia.
