Further on University Challenge, though I took no financial interest in last night's match between a British Library team and crossword compilers, my money would have been safe. The BL triumphed by over a hundred points (though to their shame they did not know that Anthony Panizzi had translated Ariosto's Orlando Furioso). As Jeremy Paxman observed, the crossword compilers seemed to be used to taking longer over their answers. But their team was certainly august: it consisted of Araucaria and Bunthorne of the Guardian, the crossword editor of the Times and a younger man who sets for both the Guardian and the Independent.
