Two out of four

Not a bad day by any means: I had Magical Balliwick in Connaught Cup at Wincanton ( won 3/1) and Claymore in 245 at Wetherby (5/1) in a yankee. If only Perouse (see previous posts to this blog) had managed a win instead of second place in the Lanzarote Hurdle at Kempton....but he blundered at the last which cost him the race, but only just. Fourth selection was Shardante in 320 at Wetherby, who was doing well until unseating his rider.

Today's THES carries two letters continuing the debate on open access, one from Fred Friend rebutting the assertion that open access will censor publication according to ability to pay, and the other suggesting that learned societies might need to charge higher submission fees than other publishers. Reading the Golden Bowl (and it's taking me a long time. I bought a copy on the day of the Varsity match, to read over lunch and on the journey home...that's over a month ago). Last night on the train read the long conversation the Prince and Charlotte have while shopping and was struck not only by its poignancy and James's well-known subtlety , but also by James's extraordinary ear. The dialogue between the two is exactly right.

And today Father Cyril Barrett, Reader in Philosophy at Warwick. The obituarist says "he made no attempt to disguise his chafing at the Vatican's hierarchical politics and social conservatism" and quotes him as saying in a London restaurant on the day of the assassination attempt on the current Pope that "the only thing wrong with that bloody Turk was that he couldn't shoot straight".

Discovered this, an excellent way of sharing RSS feeds. iBlogger doesn't support it yet, but I have suggested it as a possible enhancement on the ibloggers.net forum. In the meantime, I may try to think of a way of using my very limited knowledge of XML to achieve something similar

Missing obits in Times compact edition

Odd: the Times web site lists some obits in today's paper that don't appear in the compact (ie tabloid) edition I bought at 6 this am, including that of the milliner Elfrieda Fluss .

CILIP evidence to House of Commons Science and Technology Committee

Discussion on the Jiscmail lis-cilip list suggest that CILIP will be submitting evidence to the House of Commons Science & Technology Committee enquiry , which is good. The Health Libraries Group has also undertaken to submit evidence. The more the merrier, I say
