I little thought when I entered the room where the Seaford Striders meet on a Wednesday at the Downs Leisure Centre that a speed session was on the cards. But the club chairman rubbed his hands, and told us we would have a gentle warm-up, and then some speed work of unspecified duration. What could possibly go wrong?
In reality the gentle warm-up was a merciless dash over a mile and a half, followed by morale-sapping fast 700m circuits of Seaford back-streets. What the poor residents made of it, heaven only knows.
I made a thorough muddle with my Garmin, but I think I ran the 700m bits in something like 3:30, 3:30, 3:45 and 3:45. In all, 4.51 miles in the Janathon bank.
