Derivation
The term cravatomancy is a neologism, a compound word derived from the French cravate, neck-cloth and the Greek μαντεἱα, divination, hence telling the future through ties. The ancients did not wear ties, as far as we know, so the term emerged when Sweder noticed the blue and yellow tie I wore on election day, 6 May 2010, and thought it foretold a Tory-Lib-Dem coalition.

Pink stripes

I can't say that I feel a thrill when I put this tie on. It's perfectly inoffensive, but it doesn't give me the immediate feeling of being right that some ties do. At the end of this project I may well rank ties, according to various criteria. There are those that give me an instant feeling of aesthetic and sartorial fulfilment, those that others have complimented me on, those that have gathered appreciative comments here and on Flickr....and some that make me wonder quite why I bought them.
